In the last part of this blog series, I focused on the potentially disruptive character of digitization. Today and in the final part of the series, I’ll be looking at more recent developments in technology – although artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things aren’t really all that new. However, these technologies have gained more and more attention in the last five years.
IoT in private homes – and in companies?
More and more households are benefiting from the favorable entry-level prices, and the “intelligent” home provides security, saves time, and reduces energy costs. While, in the domestic sector, people only need to decide on the right technology for the individual household these days, many companies have not even opted for technology as yet.
According to my research, the Internet of Things is definitely part of the digitization strategy for many companies. No wonder. Something that works in a small smart home should also be no problem at the company level. Here, machines are provided with sensors and networked together so that they can “report” on their status and needs – whatever the nature of the data may be that the sensors record.
It is obvious that the integration of business processes must be taken into consideration here. And once again, we find ourselves talking about enterprise content management. Automated use of the data captured by sensors in real time allows for more efficient design of business processes. That much is evident. Especially with the EASY Cloud Platform, we certainly provide the flexibility that is necessary for solving such tasks.
Adaptive computer systems (AI) and enterprise content management: How do they fit together?
Of course, with all of that, the volume of data is growing enormously. Who can possibly maintain an overview here, let alone conduct quick and successful searches? At this point, digitization also demands the use of new technologies which make it possible to handle these mountains of data sensibly. Initially, ECM refers “only” to a company’s content – but what if that content grows by orders of magnitude? The answer is sensors/IoT.
It’s no wonder that new technologies also need to be used in ECM in this context. Machine learning, deep learning algorithms, strong and weak AI are all involved. Buzzwords? As Aaron Levie, BOX CEO, recently said to TechCrunch.com in this context, “The only way we are going to be able to make sense of all this data and be able to extract more and more value from it is through machine learning and artificial intelligence.”
When I look at the options currently available to me as a private user – the personal assistant Siri, for example – I know that we are at the beginning of a development – still. In the TechCrunch interview, Aaron Levi continues, “We think we are on the cusp of, for the first time, where technology can actually work on behalf of the user. I don’t have to tell it to do all of the things I want to generate value from. The system itself can begin to generate that value on its own, and that’s a pretty significant turning point for technology (…).”
Those are hopeful statements. We are on the threshold of these technologies, so they will soon be useful. We at EASY SOFTWARE have been preparing for this for a long time. And now one final tidbit from December 12, 2017: AIs are now developing themselves, and the results outperform those created by people.
